Latest Odds: Brock Lesnar (-270) vs. Heath Herring (+210)
Brock Lesnar (0-1 in the UFC and a MMA record of 1-1) has become one of the most talked about men in sport. His controversial debut at UFC 81 only added to the intrigue.
Lesnar secured a takedown only seconds into fight after catching a kick. His ground and pound looked devastating. Former UFC champion Frank Mir was being brutalised and it looked like Dana White had a new superstar in the UFC but out of nowhere referee Steve Mazagati deducted a point from Lesnar for repeatedly striking Mir to the back of the head.
After the restart Lesnar once again took Mir to the ground and proceed to tenderise the BJJ expert. However a beaten down Mir managed to secure a kneebar and forced Lesnar to tap.
Its hard to analyse a fighter that has not spent more than 2 minutes in the ring or cage. In those two minutes we have seen the best and worst. He looked furiosus yet fragile. He looked impressive but ultimately failed. The reality is after dedicating himself to this sport, training for almost 2 years on all aspects of the game, he was submitted in under a minute.
Also lets not overestimate Frank Mir as an opponent. His most notable wins have been Tim Sylvia, Antoni Hardonk and Brock Lesnar. It seems to me that his most prominent wins have been over guys that have very little to no ground experience. He struggled to beat Wes Sims and Dan Christison. He has had a cardio issues for years and his striking still looks very suspect. He is by no means a top ten heavyweight dispite the title shot. He has loses to Marcio Cruz, Brandon Vera, Ian Freeman. Again these guys are not the cream of the crop.
Heath Herring 28-13 in MMA and 2-2 in the UFC is coming of a upset win over Cheick Kongo. He is of the most experienced guys in the game and at the age of 30 that’s quite an accomplishment. He has faced just about every top heavyweight in the world including Fedor Emelianenko, Mirko “CroCop” Filipovic and has fought the current UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira three times. Fight fans however have short memories and only remember your most recent accomplishments. He is 5-4-1 in his last ten fights and has disappointed in the UFC . A win here would certainly put him into title contention.
While he may not be one of the elite heavyweight strikers in the world, he poses a major threat to Lesnar standing. Lesnar will not be able to go for takedowns with reckless abandon like he did against Mir. He will not be as aggressive with his ground and pound. It takes years to find the right balance between your primary skill and other vital MMA disciplines. It also takes many loses.
Lesnars cardio has also not been tested and is major factor that could very well come into play against someone like Herring. If the fight goes beyond round one we will begin to see further weakness in Lesnars game. Herring is the value pick and my bet of the night.
