The undefeated Welshmen is the clear favorite with the oddsmakers, the public and just about everyone picking him over the Roy Jones including the media.

“In Las Vegas, Calzaghe is in a  -270 according to Bodog, and a survey done by the promoters finds that most people in and around the boxing business would put their money on Calzaghe as well. Asked who they’d pick, a group of 15 fighters and one trainer went with Calzaghe by a margin of 10-7. And a group of 18 boxing writers (myself included) went with Calzaghe by a margin of 13-5.”

I don’t buy into all the Calzage hype. His bout with Hopkins was far from impressive and I think given a dedicated Roy Jones Jr shows up on Saturday he is primed for his first career loss. Jones is a once in a lifetime talent and being put into the underdog position here is something that will suit him very well. Remember he was the 4-1 underdog in his impressive win over James Toney, then considered the worlds best fighter.

Notes from Middleweight

Two guys that have been in the German press a lot lately have been Felix Sturm and Arthur Abraham.

After Pavliks loss to Hopkins the balance of power in the middleweight division has shifted drastically.

After the destruction by Felix Sturm of number 4 ranked middleweight Sebastian Sylvester now means a  Sturm vs Abraham fight in Germany is worth a lot more money for either fighter than a fight with Pavlik in America.

Sturm is a very good stylish boxer without much pop - he gave De La Hoya fits back when they met and also lost when he met Javier Castillejo in 2006. He was out boxing Castillejo but felt the pressure of fighting at home, heard the boos as they wanted more action out of him and he turned the boxing clinic into a ‘fight’ and was reminded he doesn’t have the power to give the fans a show. He has the ability to outbox a guy like Abraham although Abraham is the bigger fighter and would be favored. Abraham started as a 165 lb guy so he’s built to carry more weight. i think Pavlik is too well-rounded a fighter and too big for Sturm. Pavlik would just be too much - too good with that jab, too good to the body and too good countering so long as he stays at 160 ; ) as much as i like watching Sturm I think both these guys in the end would be too big - come fight night he’d likely give up 8 pounds to either of them.

Arthur Abraham: I’d fight Sturm For Free

It’s the mega fight every boxing fan wants to see but it there even a chance of it happening?

Reports are that the Abraham camp are going to offer Sturm 2.5 million. However Abraham has come up with even better plan to guarantee the fight.

The Berliner will face Raul Marquez claims: “If all roads lead to nowhere, then I’ll fight him for free. Boxing fans have a right to know who the strongest German middleweight is.”

The main obstacle remains the TV deal. Sauerland [Abrahams manager] wants gift the fight to ZDF then giving his current network ARD rights to broadcast the rematch. Its unclear whether either network will agree to deal.

The public demands Abraham vs Sturm

What an impressive performance by WBA champion Felix Sturm. But now what? The absolute mega fight would be the double World title showdown between Sturm and IBF Champ Arthur Abraham. It’s the fight everyone wants to see, it would make boxing history.

Never before have two German world champions met in the ring before. The first offer on the table was 1.5 million euros for Sturm but Sturms price tag has risien to at least to 2.5 million euros. He may get to fight at his desired broadcaster ZDF but the rematch would be broadcast on ARD should he agree to the deal.

The technician Sturm vs the  with the “Abra-Hammer”: This mega fight (and the rematch) could easily crack the 10 million viewer mark.
