Joe Lauzon made his octagon debut with a memorable knock out win over UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver at UFC 63. The upset victory propelled him into UFC stardom. After it was announced that he would be a contestant on TUF 5, many had him as the clear favorite but a decision loss to Manny Gamburyan saw him exit at the semi final stage. After the TUF 5 final Lauzon dedicated himself to full time fighting moving to Hilo Hawaii to train with one the words best, BJ Penn. Lauzon is an aggressive fighter with quick hands and excellent submissions. While majority of his MMA victories have come via submissions he has the speed and power to be a be threat on his feet too. Despite the age difference, with 19 professional MMA bouts, he is the more experienced fighter of the two.
Florian is 6-2 in the UFC, 8-3 in MMA, his last loss coming to Sean Sherk at UFC 64. After his victory over Din Thomas Florian revealed that he had suffered from a herniated disk but has now fully recovered. Of his seven victories, all have been stoppages earning him the nickname of “The Finisher“. He has progressed his game in each of his UFC outings. His striking in particular has improved substantially. Along with this Jiu Jitsu , his kicks and elbows are a real weapons now. However he has a long way to go before he could be considered among top echelon of UFC lightweights . At 31 he has only 11 pro fights. For his age he does lack experience. Only 3 of his 11 professional MMA bouts have gone beyond the 2nd round, Florian only winning one of the three. His most impressive win was a somewhat controversial victory over Din Thomas, while his two defeats in the UFC were total dominations. His progress in the octagon has been impressive but with current odds for this match-up all the value is on Lauzon. I see two evenly matched fighters in all aspects of the game, the odds should really be closer than what they are. This fight could go either way: my bet is on Joe Lauzon at +180.
